1) Great drinks 2) Hot bartenders 3) "Friendly" patrons This bar does tend to skew older 30 - 40 types. Levi / stocky types. I had a great time every time I went in. It is definitely worth staying for a drink or 2. Oh yeah.. they pour strong too. You may just grow chest hair after drinking the drinks. ;-) NOTE: the bathroom can be a little bit "friendly" at times.

Can't request a song. Even with a tip. In fact, he'll delete what you request. Not a smart business idea. There are other bars... I hope the owner considers employing this guy. I loved Daddy's. Even have some of the previous owners clothes. Business 101: the more fun people have, the more they'll stick around and drink. There are other DJs that I'm sure would like to create the sense of masculinity and community that 440 is.

Best Bar in Castro

We have always enjoyed this bar when it was Daddy's and now as 440 Castro. It tends to the older and more masculine which we like. However, there does not seem to be an outdoor patio. As an occasional smoker, I looked for it but did not find it.

I love 440 but it seems that the bar is totally changing. It seems the young hipsters with daddy issues are all that frequent there. Along with the horrible go-go boys who look like they are drug addicts.

This bar used to be called Daddy's and has kept that same clientele. The drinks are some of the most affordable in the Castro including a $2 Miller Lite draft. The staff is friendly and underwear night on Mondays can get a bit crazy. If you are under 30 the only reason you would end up here is if you are bar hopping with older friends. The best way to describe this bar is it's the Folsom bar type crowd in a Castro bar.

Fun, fun, fun

I am not a bear. I am not into bears. I am not an aficionado of bear culture, levis or leather. That doesn't really matter. Although it is clearly a club that appeals to the bear/leather crowd, it's welcoming of everyone. The staff and the patrons are friendly, completely without attitude or assumption, and just there to mingle with friends and strangers alike. It's clear, too, that many are there for more than mingling, but the place is delightfully free of any desperation or ill-feeling. Add to it remarkably cheap alcohol, two nice bar areas, decent music and a little patio, and you have a really good place to come in out of the cold San Francisco summers.

We visited on a Friday night and the bar was so busy you could not see the floor, and there was a line for the men's room. The clientele is a mix of 20s on up to 50s. The guys are friendly and cute, and not shy about showing affection.

My partner, my best friend and I had a great time in the Castro area April 21-25. The mix of bars were great. We recieved VIP treatment from a new club there. That just show the quality of this city and its people. Badlands is still the place to hang out for drinks, great music videos and dancing. It gets crowded on Saturdays but the line moves pretty fast. People are really friendly there and the drinks are served fast. Bartenders were pretty cute. Not too muscular not too skinny.

Some friends an i like to go in and grab a beer and just hang for a bit. The guys are usually very friendly and inviting but this is a bar for mostly bears cubs and otters yet there not going to be mean to you if your not;) all and all its a cool bar

We always end up at the 440 at least once on every trip to SF. It has enough SF "edge" to it to be a lot of fun. Can be very cruisy on a good night.

My favorite bar in the Castro

I love this place. I've lived in the Castro for about 5 years and this bar has become my regular hangout. The guys are typically very easy-going and the bartenders very friendly. Part of the appeal for me is that 440 attracts a fairly wide age range of men. You'll see men in their 20's to men in their 60's. Friday's through Monday's are definitely the peak nights. Monday night is underwear night which gets going around 10. The bar can really get crowded and hot, which may not appeal to everyone. 440 may not be the nicest space in the Castro, but you'll always find lots of sexy/friendly men and awesome bartenders.

With an Australian accent I was most welcomed...alot of fun was had.. manly and some sexy men but best of all was how friendly the venue was: a good carlton draught on tap would be a definite bonus ! In passing but certainly NOT unimportant bloody good bar staff !

Nice, friendly local hangout for the 40+ Levis crowd. Monday is underwear night, decent DJ music, but it's not always pretty. On weekends, everyone I meet is from New Jersey!

Fun place and decent priced drinks. If we go out we sometimes start or afternoon or evening here. However if you stay to long scandalous things begin to happen in the back and also in the bathroom. Have fun boys!

I came here for a vacation and it is dead from Monday to Wednesday. I am from L.A. and was disappointed. Just a no-go on Monday-Wednesday in the summer.

The crowd is not always to my taste, but at least it's still a crowd. 440 has done better in this recession than many other night spots in the Castro. I think it's because of the efficient staff and easy access to Castro Street getaway-by-taxi.

Hopping on a monday night

Went there monday night. The place was hopping around 11. The men were older muscle bears and their admirers. If you were in your underwear, you got $1 off your drink. They have a clothes check. They had great SanFran beer. Delicious!! The people were nice (though a lot were from out of town). I would definitely go back, and this time I'd take my clothes off. :)

First bar hit during the Castro visit.

Ok, hit this bar early on a Saturday night and it was getting full already. Not many young things here, but a few bear daddies to look at. Not the most pretty people here, but the beers were cheap and the set up is all about cruising. Stand at the top of the stairs to get a good look at the front bar! UPDATE: Was here on 10/18 and 10/20. Place was packed with people. Very friendly, quick service, but again, not much to look at. It's a great place to start the night, tho!

Getting better!

Heads up Daddy's is now known as 440 Castro and it is changing for the better. It's no longer just an older leather bar crowd. It now has a nice mix of all ages and types. Theme nights and fundraisers are now becoming part of the bar and they are very successful. The owners have done a great job of turning this bar into a fun venue. They usually have a few beer busts every week so you're getting more for your buck.
