Transgender Tuesdays: A Clinic in the Tenderloin at Frameline36
Saturday Jun 23, 2012 10:00AM-1:00PM
in San Francisco
Join us Saturday, June 23, at 11am in the Castro Theatre, for the world premiere of Transgender Tuesdays: A Clinic in the Tenderloin!!
18 years ago, a team of HIV specialists were trying to reach out to the most under-served group in their region during the worst part of the AIDS epidemic to hit San Francisco. They didn't know it at the time, but they were starting what would become the country's first Primary Care clinic aimed at transgendered members of society. Through the merging of health care providers, activists from every ethnic and gender group in the city, and actively participating trans folk, a whole new model of care emerged. What's more, through bridging these groups, a truly unique and inclusive sense of trans community was born.
Now, with the help of dozens of creative artists, hundreds of supporters, and some of the most courageous souls to ever step in front of the camera, the pioneering efforts of Transgender Tuesdays at Tom Waddell will be shared with the world.
The stories in this feature reveal the humanity of transgendered people, particularly that of those who faced some of the worst conditions imaginable during the "bad old days." They are amazing, they are jaw-dropping, they are horrifying, infuriating, and inspiring. This is not your sitcom or reality show psychodrama; it's not chair-throwing daytime shock television or prime-time cable surgery; not even Ru Paul's drag race can touch the honest life stories that these stars, patients, and staff share here. This is the real deal, and it will serve as a tool for activists working toward equality and human rights for years to come. Editor Nathaniel Walters ("Survivor") and Consulting Editor Bill Weber ("The Cockettes" and "We Were Here") bring you a polished, highly entertaining, educational film about trans history and current realities that will be useful around the globe.
Every story has a time and a place to be told, and this one's time has come.
