A one night only dramatic reading of my new play, PASTORELLA, as part of BEHIND THE CURTAIN an Exit Theater/No Nude Men co-presentation of three plays by local writers exploring what it means to "make theater", using that tried and true staple of the medium: the backstage comedy.
PASTORELLA, which plays March 30th, is the tale of Gwen (Annika Bergman), a Fresh-Off-The-College aspiring actress who has landed the role of Chloe in an indie theater production of Stoppard's classic, ARCADIA. Backstage she gets to know Warren (John Caldon) and Josh (Peter Townley), a pair of squabbling lovers whose different ideas of how to pursue a theater career come to a head a week before the show opens. Rounding out Gwen's first taste of real-world theater life is the burgeoning love affair between a jaded teenage commercial actress (Kate Jones) and the tirelessly enthusiastic newbie playing her brother (Anthony Pinggera); the philosophical musings of the racist f**k (or is he) playing the butler (Andrew Chung); and the domineering presence of a fading diva who has never let go of her greatest theatrical triumph (Carole Swann). Guided by the kindly company director (Jeremy Cole), his no-nonsense wife (Allene Hebert), and the stage manager who is somehow also playing the world's most unnecessary character- Noakes (Charles Lewis III), the young actress navigates her deep-end emersion in the tragicomedy that is trying to put on a play in modern day America, where the 99% balance the desire to make art with the reality of the situation.
Directed by Anthony R. Miller, this will be the first public performance of the script, which features more in-jokes and theater/film/tv references per page than any play I've ever written.
Tickets are a mere $10.00 at the door, with half our box office proceeds going to benefit the Exit. No reservations necessary- we've got 90 seats to fill. Every night of BEHIND THE CURTAIN will also feature a pre-show candid interview with the writer, so don't miss the other nights either, with Meg O'Connor's IN THE WINGS on the 28th and Marissa Skudlarek's THE ROSE OF YOUTH on the 29th.
