Gay for Good moves mountains. We’ll be doing it again on Saturday, August 17, from 9:00 am to 12:30 pm at the showcase Quesada Gardens in the heart of Bayview. The mountains will be made of mulch that neighbors need to spread along the 650-foot length of a large community garden project. We also will build a retaining wall, perform some planting, and possibly repaint blocks of color on a wall mural. If anyone has basic construction skills, there is a need to lay some decorative bricks around a sign post. We’ve worked with this group before, at a different location, and had a great experience. Gloves and all tools will be supplied.
ATTIRE: Dress comfortably, but sturdy shoes and long pants are suggested. Be ready for sun; while it may be foggy in other parts of the City, it’s usually sunny at this location in August.
SNACKS & DRINKS: Water, coffee and snacks will be provided.
LOCATION: 1747 Quesada Avenue SF, between 3rd Street and Newhall (just west of 3rd Street). Map: https://maps.google.com/maps?oe=&q=1727+Quesada+Avenue&ie=UTF-8&hq=&hnear=0x808f7f053063f8cf:0x187ad5e46c67b4eb,1727+Quesada+Ave,+San+Francisco,+CA+94124&gl=us&ei=wEwBUrWICuqbiAKmwYHYCg&ved=0CC8Q8gEwAA
DIRECTIONS: MUNI – 22 or 24 bus, get off at 3rd Street. T THIRD – to Palou stop and walk one more block south to Quesasda (turn right). Driving/Parking – Note that the north side of Quesada Avenue median strip is a dead-end cul de sac while the south side goes through from 3rd to Newhall. Parking is more plentiful up the hill on Newhall Street. If you need transportation and are MUNI-adverse, speak up!
ADDITIONAL INFO: The Quesada Gardens Initiative is a not-for-profit group of neighbors engaged in grassroots social and environmental change in Bayview Hunters Point. Through resident leadership they have completed dozens of connected projects featuring gardens, public art and gathering spaces – you’ll see a collection of the gardens and art projects clustered along a couple of blocks just off 3rd Street. They have turned an area of the City notorious for blight into a model of beauty and sustainability, all at little cost to the public. While it was ground zero for crime when the group organized over ten years ago, now it is a beautiful place and the safe route through the neighborhood. The group has hosted thousands of volunteers over the years, and has yet to lose one!
