FEATURED FILMS & SPEAKERS:
SPARK: A BURNING MAN STORY is an engaging behind-the-scenes documentary about the dreams and challenges of Burning Man and its unique culture of participatory art. Each year, 60,000 people from around the globe gather in a dusty windswept Nevada desert to build a temporary city, collaborating on large-scale art and partying for a week before burning a giant effigy in a ritual frenzy. Rooted in principles of self-expression, self-reliance and community effort, Burning Man has grown famous for stirring ordinary people to shed their nine-to-five existence and act on their dreams. SPARK takes us behind the curtain with Burning Man organizers and participants, revealing a year of unprecedented challenges and growth. When ideals of a new world based on freedom and inclusion collide with realities of the “default world,” we wonder which dreams can survive.
Movie Director & Producer Steve Brown will kick off the screening with context on what inspired the film as well as a audience led Q&A session.
Brown is founder and CEO of Spark Pictures. Spark: A Burning Man Story is his first feature film. Throughout his career, he has been a founder, CEO and board member of innovative media and tech ventures that empower people to pursue their passion. Brown serves on the boards of Hudl, the leading video analysis platform for sports teams, and Music Prodigy, an intuitive tablet application for music instruction. Previously, Brown was founder of Health Hero Network, a pioneer of personal health monitoring, and cofounder of Catch.com, a mobile applications company focused on creative collaboration. Brown graduated with honors from Stanford University in 1991 with a B.S. in physics.
THE CAMPAIGN tells the inside story of the fight to stop California’s wildly controversial Proposition 8, which banned gay marriage and ignited a movement. With exclusive access to the state Headquarters of the “No on 8′′ campaign in San Francisco, filmmaker Christie Herring captures the essence of this emotional journey. In-depth observational footage and interviews follow stakeholders, from Executive Committee Members to first-time volunteers. THE CAMPAIGN explores fault lines of religion, race and identity at a critical turning point in the push for LGBT rights, offering an intimate portrait of committed individuals inside a pressure cooker, compelled by both circumstance and their passionate beliefs to go far beyond their everyday selves.
SURFING FOR CHANGE: INDONESIA TRASH TUBES
Bali is a little island with a big problem – it’s drowning in trash. In this short film, host & pro-surfer, Kyle Thiermann, shows the good, the bad, and the ugly of Indonesia and what we can do to restore it to the pristine, tropical paradise it once was. Surfing For Change: Indonesia Trash Tubes is Kyle Thiermann’s seventh film in the Surfing for Change series. The video takes you on a journey through Indonesia, where Thiermann interviews environmental activists about the trash epidemic and scores some beautiful waves along the way.
