The past year has been a particularly horrible period for LGBTQI rights worldwide while at the same time being a mostly positive year here in America.
Marriage Equality is on a roll in this country, and in many places in this nation members of the gay community face fewer obstacles than before (Mississippi being a notable exception).
However, in other parts of the world the story is not so rosy; there is still much discrimination toward the LGBTQI community. There are certainly numerous recent examples covered well in the media such as in Uganda, Nigeria, Brunei, Iran, Iraq, Jamaica, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Russia and many others. Unfortunately, there are 77 countries where homosexuality is illegal. There are 38 African countries which criminalize homosexuality, in four of those…Mauritania, northern Nigeria, southern Somalia and Sudan, the punishment is death. While it isn’t illegal in Russia anymore, President Putin last summer signed an anti-gay propaganda law, and local governments often look the other way when confronted with obvious hate crimes. There is still much discrimination toward the LGBT community. During the Pink Triangle Commemoration Ceremony at 10:30 am on Saturday June 28, various speakers will point out that the kind of hatred that existed in the 1930’s & 40’s still exists today.
Please remember the hatred of the past to try and help prevent it from happening again. The display is to bring the message of the pink triangle to the world. The message being what can happen when hatred and bigotry become law. Let’s try to prevent such hatred from happening again.
The next display will be June 28 & 29.
The commemoration ceremony will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday June 28, 2014 on top of Twin Peaks in San Francisco.
