Is San Francisco ready for the debut of one of Chicago's best-kept house secrets?
This is an artist whose first record was secretly kept by a small cabal of Chicago house enthusiasts for 3 years before it was finally played for the public at large by Derrick Carter on stage at the 2012 Movement festival in Detroit.
This is The Black Madonna.
She's not just a great producer, either, but a disc jockey extraordinaire, known for spinning technically flawless sets that range in genre but not in quality.
We've had our eye on bringing her to The House Pit for a while now, and after several setbacks that were out of anyone's control, the day has finally arrived: The Black Madonna is coming to SF to play for our faithful house enthusiasts at Housepitality.
Opening up, our house production specialist and resident, Mr. Bai-ee, originally hailing from Chicago but now living in Oakland. It's a perfect match.
In the back, Timoteo Gigante will represent the M.O.M. DJs with an all-night backroom takeover. (M.O.M. stands for Motown On Mondays). The M.O.M. parties began in San Francisco as a weekly party focused on the convergence of soul music and dancing, and now span the country, with weekly events in cities all over the US. We're honored to host one of the SF residents to take over our back room.

The Black Madonna
From a series of breakthrough releases to a debut at Panorama Bar, Smart Bar’s first female talent buyer has had a lot on her plate this year. Her first record, “Exodus” was an anthem to a concentrated pool of Chicago house aficionados, passed from person to person for nearly three years before anyone outside of the city ever heard it. Its champions now range from the esteemed Little White Earbuds blog to fellow Smart Bar resident, Derrick Carter, who debuted “Exodus” to the rest of the world on the mainstage at Movement 2012. The Black Madonna’s catalog of current and upcoming releases/remixes now includes labels such as Classic, Freerange, Home Taping is Killing Music, Argot and Stripped & Chewed
Since the debut release on Stripped & Chewed, The Black Madonna has been remixed by The Revenge and Nicholas, while releasing a bestselling and now virtually impossible to find split EP with Chicago’s disco master, DJ Rahaan that currently resells for up to ten times its original value. In 2013, Madonna shared remix duties with Matthew Herbert on the James Curd/No Dial Tone split for Classic Music Company and remixed Roberto Rodriguez for Freerange. Fervent supporters of her work include Ashley Beedle, Dimitri From Paris, Jacques Renault, Luke Solomon, Derrick Carter, 6th Borough Project, Jimpster, Move D, Chris Duckenfield, Junior Boys and many more. Crosstalk International describes her current project, the “Lady Of Sorrows EP” on Argot, as “her most fully realized work to date — A great leap forward from the sample-clad disco house of her records for Home Taping Is Killing Music and Stripped & Chewed. Weaving live orchestration and irresistible synth lines through tough percussive frames, both tracks bare their souls to listeners with enough muscle to command dancers’ attention.”
Her mixes for Little White Earbuds and Bicep’s Rinse FM show, contributed in spring of 2013, were received with acclaim. A sublime technician behind the decks, The Black Madonna is known for fluent and dynamic all-vinyl appearances, which span from disco to techno.

Timoteo Gigante
Timoteo Gigante has been playing music since he was 13 and DJing since the mid 1990s. He moved to Europe out of high school to enrich his world-view and learn different musical techniques, e.g. flamenco guitar. After a year in Spain and many months around central Europe he returned to San Francisco to further seek exploration in music and music history. He was awakened each morning to the VERY loud scratch routines of DJ Gordo Cabeza. They lived together for several years. Timo couldn’t beat him, so he joined him. Stealing many hours of practice on Gordo’s turntables and spending a small fortune on records led, quickly, to many gigs and residencies in SF, NYC and Europe.
His musical selections have the common bond of two distinct characteristics: Soul and Funk. From the Columbian disco of Fruko y sus Tesos to the soulful reggae vocals of Alton Ellis and John Holt. From Golden Era hip hop (His brother was in a break dancing crew in 1983) to Motown. From Nigerian legend Fela Ransome-Kuti to The Funky Meters (Art Neville picked him up hitchhiking when he was 18 and invited him back to his home studio). From Neo Soul to Jamaican Dub. From House music to Brazilian music. There are no boundaries to his musical explorations.
