UK's hit record label, Modern Love, tours their finest with a special stop in SF! Featuring our favorites, Andy Stott, Demdike Stare and Millie & Andrea!
Andy Stott made his debut for the Modern Love label in 2005 with the 'Replace EP' - a 4 track exposition of his uniquely slanted production style taking in Chi-Town and Motor City influences with an obtuse genetic code at its core. In the years since he has released over a dozen EP's and two albums under his own name, as well as several productions under the Andrea moniker for Modern Love's 'Daphne' sublabel. Refusing to settle, his output has veered from deepest Techno to broken Garage, slowed down House and hyperactive Footwork - always referencing his unique stylistic signatures: deep, complex and oddly beautiful.
2011 saw the release of two EP's 'Passed Me By' and 'We Stay Together' - companion pieces which saw a shift of sound into ever more frayed territory, slowing the tempos down for a set of tracks that grabbed the attention of many and ended up on countless year-end charts. The following year produced what is by now regarded as a landmark album 'Luxury Problems', - a record that introduced new elements; most notably the vocals of Alison Skidmore, Andy's piano teacher from back in his school days. A combination of accessible yet inherently deviant tropes and a production style which has become more individual and identifiable with the passing of time and has attracted a huge amount of interest, with countless features in publications as diverse as Pitchfork, Vogue and the New York TImes, as well as appearances at numerous festivals and shows for the likes of SXSW, Unsound, Mutek, PItchfork MOMA events and so on continuing to expose his work to an ever-growing and often bewitched audience.
Recently, Stott has partnered with Miles Wittaker, to form Millie and Andrea. Both stalwarts of Manchester's Modern Love imprint, Andy Stott forged a partnership with Miles Whittaker (from Pendle Coven and Demdike Stare) in 2008. Together the pair create luscious dubby techno as Millie & Andrea, released solely through ML's sister label Daphne.
Demdike Stare is a collaboration between Sean Canty and Miles Whittaker, two childhood friends from the North of England with voracious appetites for record collecting. After years spent mining vinyl bins for source material, the pair started working in earnest back in 2008, re-appropriating sounds they had spent a lifetime cataloguing into weird and immersive music of their own. Demdike have so far produced a trio of albums (Symbiosis, Tryptych and Elemental) loosely themed around the occult and the rich heritage of Library music, while a number of intriguing mixtapes released over the last couple of years have indicated that the project is headed in new and unexpected directions.
In 2013 the first in an ongoing series of exploratory twelve-inches brought together under the 'Testpressing' banner appeared on Modern Love, finding Demdike heading onto more intense, brutal terrain. Inspired by everything from Industrial music to Noise, Free Jazz to House, Techno and Concrete - Demdike Stare have refused to rest on their laurels or become too comfortable with their surroundings, something that's perhaps most evident when evaluating the sheer scale of the projects they have undertaken in the last 18 months. From live-scoring films for the BFI to more commercial soundtrack work in Hollywood, from their 'Concealed' productions with Krakow’s Sinfonietta Cracovia, to the esoteric selections of their 'Before My Eyes' sessions with Raime/BEB and the searing late night sets anyone lucky enough to have seen them play will no doubt have imprinted on their minds - you just never know what mood you'll find them in.
