Amidst the flurry of the latest tech boom, the Bay Area has emerged as a paradigmatic example of the affordable housing crisis reshaping cities throughout the country. The migration of an economically powerful new gentry into the urban core of San Francisco and other cities has resulted in a historic number of evictions and the decimation of low-income and communities of color.
The Hastings Race and Poverty Law Journal is hosting a symposium on Wednesday, February 4, 2015: “What’s the ‘G’? Gentrification and the Myth of Fair Housing.” This symposium will provide an opportunity for practitioners, community members, academics, and students to examine the socio-political consequences of gentrification and whether development is possible without displacement. Dialogue will center on the historical and present day struggles in the fight for housing and economic justice, and will consider the role of the legal field in preserving diverse communities.
The symposium will be held at the Alumni Reception Center, located on the second floor of 200 McAllister St, San Francisco, CA 94102.
