TONGUES UNTIED(1991)
"Marlon Riggs's Tongues Untied rises above the 'deeply personal' — far above it — in exploring what it means to be black and gay. Angry, funny, erotic and poetic by turns ( and sometimes all at once), it jumps from interview to confession, music video to documentary to poem."
LOOKING FOR LANGSTON (1989)
“Award-winning British film-maker Isaac Julien invokes LangstonHughes as a black gay cultural icon, against an impressionistic, atmospheric setting that parallels a Harlem speakeasy of the 1920s with an 80s London nightclub. Extracts from Hughes' poetry are interwoven with the work of cultural figures from the 1920s and beyond, including black poets Essex Hemphill and Bruce Nugent, and photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, constructing a lyrical and multilayered narrative. The result is a beautiful and ultimately celebratory piece about artistic expression and the nature of black gay desire.”
Rotimi Agbabiaka is an actor, director, writer and teaching artist.
He is a collective member of the San Francisco Mime Troupe, has performed with troupes like Just Theater, Cal Shakes, and Beach Blanket Babylon, and his one-man show, Homeless, won the award for Best Solo Performance at the SF Fringe Festival. His alter-ego, Miss Cleo Patois, is a beautiful drag superstar and will be doing a hip hop homage at Club Something on Friday, April 10. You can next catch Rotimi in a production of James Baldwin's play, The Amen Corner, at Alter Theater in San Rafael and in a production of queer writer Tarell McCraney's play, Choirboy, at Marin Theatre Center.
