Wit-ness was created for the exhibition “Bearing Witness: Surveillance in the Drone Age” held during the San Francisco International Art Festival.
Developed from the theme of surveillance, Wit-ness includes an installation that represents the violent confrontation between identity and vulnerability, tied together by a narrative that addresses the concept of surveying and being surveyed.
Film: Wit-ness brings together performance artist Igor Josifov and fellow Macedonian Katarina Ivanovska. This creative team, along with producer Tayeb Al-Hafez and director Faisal Attrache, combined the intricacies of Josifov’s process of burning paper with a delicate dance between artist and muse.
Photolithography: Within the setting created for the film, French photographer Antoine Kem took a series of images. Kem’s images were transformed into photolithographs through positive plate lithography at Anne Olson’s studio in Wisconsin.
Burned Paper Works: Josifov has created life-sized paper human figures for this project. Motion in the fire reflections gives the figures a sense of life as they become part of an installation.
Costume Design: Milena Atanasova and Rinat Brodach reinforce the symbolism and the atmosphere of Josifov’s vision.
