THURSDAYS WEEKLY FOCUS:
This event uptrains you as a Tango Switch: one with skills to trade roles back & forth, trained with both skill and attunement (note: this IS a step up from just open-role/intercambio). We use a range of tango classics & current music. This event is structured for each dancer to: get respectful & constructive feedback, benefit from multiple partners' styles, and gain a complete tango dance skillset in both roles and transitions between roles, and increase physical listening/attunement.
7-8PM CLASS Beginner-Intermediate. Taught gender-neutral; all partners exchange and work on both roles with each exercise.
8-10PM PRACTILONGA Partners change after each 2-song set (like at a milonga, but with the supportive learning environment of a practica), initiated by a cortina. We use the line-of-dance container to get the practice of transitions in switching roles mid-song integrated with floor navigation skills. Partners can opt to dance one song each in each role, or practice continuous switching back & forth throughout both songs (stealing & trading). Since this is a learning environment it's ok to tap people on the shoulder to say hello and exchange partners AS WELL AS we encourage your practicing your cabaceo (The Look & Nod) to non-verbally switch partners. Get helpful tips from group knowledge, ask questions with less "milonga-pressure," work out the kinks and experiment. A great opportunity for women to practice leading, for men to practice following. Beginners, Fusionists, all ages and genders heartily welcomed.
NIGHTS OFF: Sometimes we take a holiday, check here or on tangomango.org or call below to check.
WANT TO VOLUNTEER? Simply post a "Volunteer Please" comment below, or Call HDM with your name, email and cellphone, and we'll send you the link to signup.
Gratitude in advance to helpers! :)
INFO: 415-335-6384.
SHOES/ATTIRE:
Casual pants, and tango shoes, or else streetshoes that have been taped, moleskinned or sueded. No big belt buckles.
Haven't committed to tango shoes yet? Ballet shoes, toe-kinis, thin-but-snug socks or buy some moleskin at Walgreens and slap it on some lace-up tennis shoes. Shoes are key, but you can slowly upgrade as we get you hooked. The test: if you can turn in the ball of one foot without feeling stuck (also known as pivoting) the shoes will work for tango.
EXPERIENCE/LEVEL:
If this is your first time ever, great! and welcome. But, we strongly recommend (so you'll learn well and won't be frustrated) you seek out a basics weekend workshop or 4-week series ASAP. Post a comment (or message us) and we'll reply to you with current local San Francisco options. Ali Woolwich and Reeva Bradley offer private lessons, message us to book.
PARKING/TRANSIT/DINERS
There is free street parking: meters are free after 6pm on all four sides of the block of the Center. Civic Ctr BART stop and Van Ness Muni Metro are an easy walk.
Its Tops is a great late-night diner right across the street to hang out afterwards, too.
TEACHERS 2015:
Ali Woolwich, Reeva Bradley and select guest teachers.
