About Sam Jordan's
www.samjordansbarandgrill.com
Established in 1959, Sam Jordan’s is the oldest AfricanAmerican Bar in San Francisco. The bar is located in the Bayview/Hunters Point community. Sam Jordan was an African American businessman, community leader and activist. Born in Diboll, TX in 1925, Sam moved to San Francisco in 1947. A Navy veteran, he worked as a longshoreman and warehouseman.
He achieved boxing success in the San Francisco Golden Gloves. A light-heavyweight, he won the championship diamond belt in 1948. Sam would serenade the crowd after every win and became known as “Singing Sam.” He opened the doors to “Sam Jordan’s Tavern” (the former name) in 1959. Because of his strong ties to the community he was affectionately known as the “Mayor of Butchertown.” Butchertown was the former name of the Bayview district and was the home to slaughterhouses, corrals and tanneries.
In 1963, Sam was the first African American to run for Mayor. He ran on the Independent ticket and finished fourth in a field of eight. In 2013, Mayor Ed Lee signed documents that officially designated Sam Jordan’s as a historical landmark.
Sam Jordan’s Bar and Grill is currently owned and operated by Sam’s children.
