Beau Travail (1999) is a film-poem-essay-masterpiece by Claire Denis. The film’s primary subject is the homosocial community of the French Legionnaires in Djibouti, Africa. It focuses on their off moments—long, lyrical passages of soldiers training for but not engaging in conflict. The film is loosely based on Melville’s Billy Budd. The soundtrack, like in many of Denis’ films, offers many surprises. Denis has made more than 14 films and this might be her greatest. Claire Denis: “Capturing bodies on film is the only thing that interests me.” Actor Grégoire Colin: “She films male bodies as if she were a homosexual man.”
Jan-Henry Gray lives, writes, and teaches in Chicago where he is a Poetry MFA candidate at Columbia College. He was born in the Philippines, grew up in California, graduated from San Francisco State, and spent over 12 years cooking at restaurants in San Francisco. He is thrilled to be screening one of his favorite films in a bookstore across the street from where he used to live. Some of his poems are published at Tupelo Quarterly, Puerto del Sol, and Fourteen Hills.
