This June I will be on the ballot seeking re-election to San Francisco’s Democratic County Central Committee. I have served on that body since 2006, championing progressive candidates and issues and representing the neighborhood and grassroots base of our Party.
I am proud of the work I have done on the Committee and proud of the endorsements I have received so far. These include: House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, Assemblymembers David Chiu and Phil Ting, both the Harvey Milk and Alice B. Toklas LGBT Democratic Clubs, the San Francisco Tenants Union, the Affordable Housing Alliance, the League of Conservation Voters and the Bay Guardian, to name just a few.
However, this year’s DCCC race is proving to be a far more competitive affair than one might have expected. You may have heard that thirteen current or former elected officials are running for the fourteen seats that represent the 17th Assembly District. That’s quite a lot of big names in the race. I know I can win re-election this June, but it’s going to take a little more effort than usual.
And effort, in political campaigns, requires raising money. I expect that several candidates will raise and spend in excess of $100,000, which seems pretty obscene for a DCCC race. I don’t need to raise nearly that much, but I do need to raise enough to make my contributions to slate cards, pay for literature to pass out at BART and Muni stops and send a mail piece. And I need to do it fast!
Please join me on Monday, May 9th, 6-8 pm, at Blackbird Bar, 2124 Market Street, to help me raise the funds to pay for this DCCC campaign. If you cannot make it on the 9th, please contribute online at https://rafaelmandelman.nationbuilder.com/mandelmandccc. There are no contribution limits for DCCC raises (a fact we should change), but of course any amount helps. Please contribute today!
