Allan deSouza NoW/Here: The Present as an Entanglement of Absences Lecture Hall | 800 Chestnut Street Free + open to all Allan deSouza’s current book project "How Art Can Be Thought" is an examination of art pedagogy and a lexicon of terms used within the art critique. His recent work Ark of Martyrs (2014) restages Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness as a contemporary wedding party. Through texts, images, video installations and performance, deSouza utilizes mistranslation and fiction as tools and counter-strategies to reframe dominant cultural narratives. DeSouza is Chair of the Department of Art Practice at UC Berkeley. His works have been shown extensively in the US and internationally, including at SF Camerawork; the Phillips Collection, Washington, DC; and others. He is represented by Talwar Gallery, New York. About the Graduate Lecture Series The Graduate Lecture Series invites students, faculty, and the general public to engage with emerging and established artists, curators, critics, and historians from local and international art communities.
