Are you an artist engaged in or hoping to work with communities? An arts administrator working in a non-profit or government agency that places artists within communities?
An educator or social service provider, interested in arts integration?
Please join us for four rich and interactive evenings weaving together the history and contemporary practice of community-based arts, with real-time, experiential learning, and community building.
Facilitated by Anne Bluethenthal and Krista DeNio, ART MATTERS, will look at specific case studies within Community Engaged Art, and explore an array of readings—historic and current—with the aim of understanding the multifaceted context in which we work.
Community engaged practice begins with the assumption that art has the potential to create positive change in our lives, communities, and the spaces we occupy—and that artists are an integral part of community life. We posit art as a platform for creating dialogue toward equity and social justice.
Successful and durational projects made with/in communities often involve multiple stakeholders, from neighborhood residents to artists, administrators and funders. In this workshop setting you’ll have an opportunity to interact with folks in all of these roles, learning from each other, and building connections and community. Together we will challenge both artist and organizer to envision a wide range of potential art making activities not limited by former models or approaches to making art.
HOW TO APPLY: Please submit a 250 word statement, describing what draws you to this course: How does it intersect with your passions and commitments? How does this work relate with how you plan to engage art in communities? Whether you are an artist, student, arts administrator, social service provider, community organizer, or funder, how do you think this workshop will advance your work?
