The Strawberry Alarm Clock
“Their roots lie in LA’s complex garage band scene and their legacy continues to hinge around that 1967 US #1 single. Yet somewhere in between these two extremes beat the heart of a visceral, experimental rock band whose instrumental prowess dazzled, whose recordings remain high water marks of late 60s psychedelic harmony pop and whose star continues to ascend, even as its core members celebrate their 49th year together.” – Shindig Magazine
Although the band was/is based in LA, the Strawberry Alarm Clock are often associated with the Haight Ashbury scene, due in part to their contributions to the 1968 movie “Psych Out” which was set there. In addition to that film’s theme song, “must hear” SAC tunes include “Rainy Day Mushroom Pillow”, “Tomorrow” (top 30 hit), “The World’s on Fire”, “Birds in my tree”, and of course “Incense and Peppermints” (#1 hit). Despite the common perception based on “I & P” that they were only a pop band, their complex, experimental style made them more of an acid/pop/rock /jazz/progressive/art band with hooks. In short, a psychedelic band then and now. SAC was also a favorite of film critic Roger Ebert, who wrote them into the Russ Meyer bit of cinematic eccentricity “Beyond the Valley of the Dolls” in which they appeared. All current members of the Strawberry Alarm Clock played on the “Incense and Peppermints” album in 1967 except for one (member since 1986), in contrast to most bands of the 60s era performing today where the opposite is more likely. Although they honor their past, they continue to write and record new songs, and occasionally materialize in a concert setting.
Currently scheduled to appear are bassist George Bunnell, drummer and lead vocalist Randy Seol, drummer Gene Gunnels, replacing Ed King (with his blessing) will be Howie Anderson and replacing (due a recent car accident) original keyboardist Mark Weitz, Glenn Brigman.
