Dear Friends & Allies:
On behalf of the thirty citywide stakeholders who have joined together in calling for the creation of the Compton's LGBTQ Historic District, I'm writing to request your support for our work at the Planning Commission on Thursday November 17th in the afternoon.
The common goal of this diverse group of stakeholders is to ensure that the blocks of dense historic and cultural resources surrounding the site of the Compton's Cafeteria riot are treated with appropriate sensitivity and recognition.
We have a bold vision for the future of this historic district that preserves and promotes our unique history concentrated in these few blocks, that places important sites like Compton's Cafeteria into the public trust, and creates a strong, resilient, diverse, and sustainable nightlife district for all of our LGBTQ communities.
On Thursday, we are asking the Planning Commissioners to provide a continuance on the project while we conduct an appropriate LGBTQ community engagement process, since LGBTQ stakeholders were not invited to the discussions on the future of these important assets.
Also, new information has recently come to light, such as the underground tunnels used to connect the gay bars are still intact. These tunnels were used to escape police violence. Compton's riot was in response to these decades of police violence. The tunnels are inextricably linked to the conditions that led to the riot.
We need adequate time to collectively determine what and if adequate mitigations are achievable that keep our history intact.
We cannot allow non-LGBTQ people to make these decisions for us.
There were a lot of deals made in this project by people from outside of our communities. We need your help to stand up for our own, to ensure that LGBTQ people are at the center of the table when others are negotiating the future of our history.
Please RSVP on our Facebook Event Page or email us back to let me know if we can count on your support:
