I think, therefore I am. Right?! Maybe not. Modern science has typically localized consciousness in the brain, but recent studies have shown evidence of consciousness showing up in the heart, the gut, and parts of individual cells. What will be revealed next? Could the mystics be right in their experience that consciousness extends beyond the body? Across time and space? What if the brain resides in consciousness, rather than the other way around?

I think, therefore I am. Right?! Maybe not. Modern science has typically localized consciousness in the brain, but recent studies have shown evidence of consciousness showing up in the heart, the gut, and parts of individual cells. What will be revealed next? Could the mystics be right in their experience that consciousness extends beyond the body? Across time and space? What if the brain resides in consciousness, rather than the other way around?
Join us for an exploration with Dr. Arnaud Delorme, an expert on the neuro-correlates of conscious experience, and creator of the free software that thousands of researchers use to study people’s brainwaves. He doesn’t promise the red pill or the blue pill, but rather a rigorous scientific exploration of consciousness and the brain.
Dr. Delorme has run experiments to track meditation and mind-wandering on three continents. He's using those results to design a new double-blind neurofeedback experiment to amplify and accelerate the effectiveness of contemplative practices. He’ll give a clear-eyed look at where the field could go next and discuss the possibility of testing if consciousness could extend beyond the brain. Be part of a fascinating evening on January 4th!
Arnaud Delorme, PhD, is a CNRS principal investigator in Toulouse, France, a faculty at the University of San Diego California, and a consulting research scientist at the Institute of Noetic Sciences. He is a long-term Zen meditator, and has taught in India on the neural correlates of conscious experience in a Master's degree program for the Birla Institute of Technology. He is widely recognized for his contribution to the field of EEG research, having designed the publicly funded EEGLAB software, which is currently the most used software for processing of EEG data. Starting in 2002, he started to look at brain dynamical changes underlying extra-ordinary states of consciousness including meditation, psycho-active agents, and mediumship.
