Some people are recognized for having good taste, but it’s those who make taste that are most commonly remembered. There’s a fine line between being a music fan and being a true enthusiast. The latter is constantly learning and sharing for sincere and earnest reasons. While popularity-chasing fans are widespread—especially in this era, marked by an obsession with “the DJ”—the few rulers of the taste-making craft outlast the hype and sit respectfully amongst their crate-digging peers.
Andrew Hogge—whom you might know better as Lovefingers—is a member of this rare breed. Most DJs within (and beyond) this unique and compelling scene—where disco, house, techno and an “anything goes” mentality cozily cohabitate—owe Lovefingers a lot. And one thing’s for sure: if it wasn’t for his countless hours of relentless posting on his Lovefingers website (lovefingers.org), which was the first and what some audiophiles consider to be the finest thread to ever grace the Web, aspiring DJs might not be nearly as interested in record-collecting today. Andrew is much more than a man with an eclectic library however; he’s a DJ, producer, multi-instrumentalist, and the ear and face of his record label ESP Institute. The LA native has released widely sought after records from a range of esoteric producers such as Tornado Wallace, Soft Rocks, Cos/Mes, Young Marco and Tambien all while maintaining his trademark future forward sound and aestheitc. From day one, ESP Institute releases have found their way into the bags of dance-floor icons from DJ Harvey to Andrew Weatherall, Erol Alkan to Dixon and James Murphy to Todd Terje. While juggling all of the above and being a full time father, Lovefingers can be found traveling the world to DJ at countless of the worlds best club nights, festivals and events such as MoMA PS1 Warm Up, the Whitney Biennial, Mayan Warrior at Burning Man, and collaborate with his friends (notably with Lee Douglas as The Stallions), as well as making regular appearances on cult radio shows like Beats In Space.
Featuring resident DJs
PRAUS (Leng Records SF)
Josh Praus is an up & coming producer and authentic disc jockey with decades of record collecting and dance music culture under his belt. Josh is just breaking out of his Marin-based studio where he's been laboriously working on tunes with the most recent released for the esoterically distinguished UK label Leng Records. Praus has been podcasting weekly from Vinyl Dreams - hit him up for the livestream link every Wednesday evening or hit up his soundcloud for past mixes!
MR. TEA (21st Sentry SF)
Influenced by the house music scene since '92, including artists such as Adamski, N-Joi, Future Sound Of London, Hardfloor and the explosive dance music melange of the early 90's that included acid house, house, techno, hardhouse and hardcore. Mr. Tea (aka Michael Devin to the IRS) has a long and storied production history, with releases on labels like Higher State Records, Hard Hands & Concrete and collaborations with folks like Paul Bleasdale (Cream) and Sabres of Paradise (Andrew Weatherall). Tea's latest activity includes deep house and techno releases for the Crossfrontier and Soundspace labels in 2016 and a three-track EP on well-known Berlin nightclub imprint Bar25.
MIKE BEE (Vinyl Dreams/Housepitality SF)
Mike Bee is no stranger to SF clubland. An SF stalwart since the mid-90's, Mike is currently the owner of SF scene HQ Vinyl Dreams Records in the Lower Haight and resident DJ at Housepitality SF and Muka. Mike's epic-length sets are fan favorites locally as well as all over the country & beyond. Look out for Mike's tour of the Pacific Northwest this March!
