Quintessential queer gym
This branch of Fitness SF--formerly Gold's--in the middle of the Castro, has the feel of a neighborhood gym, a friendly atmosphere in which guys (yes, it's almost exclusively male) run into friends and chat between reps. The gym features a small basement parking lot, a prime location, but is somewhat limited by the small size of the two floors. At peak hours, there are lines not just for the treadmills and weight machines but for the gang showers as well. Members rave about the yoga classes, and the steam room has a reputation as one of the most cruisy in a very cruisy city.
