Our brother group, 3rd Saturday Hiking Group, has extended an invitation to join on the fun and exciting annual SANTA HIKE. See all the details below:
It's Ho! Ho! Ho! time again, so get out your Santa hats. Glitter up! Bedazzle down! Don your gay apparel and bring your favorite reindeer.
This year's Santa Hike will once again highlight one of the world's most beautiful architectural achievements, the Golden Gate Bridge. We'll hike from the southwest side of the Bridge to Kirby Cove. The hike to Kirby Cove is a moderate decline on a wide fire road about 1 mile in length which means there will be a moderate/strenuous 1 mile hike out. We will enjoy a picnic lunch at Kirby Cove and then hike back to the southwest side of the Golden Gate. This hike will give us world class views of the Bridge from two directions as well as amazing views of San Francisco. The hike to Kirby cove takes us through some beautiful eucalyptus forest and Kirby cove itself is a lovely isolated little beach with some pretty spectacular views of San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge.
WHEN: Saturday, December 20.
Meet up time: 9:30am
Hike will begin promptly at 10:00am
WHERE TO MEET & DIRECTIONS: PLEASE READ - especially, if you're unfamiliar with Bridge access and parking.
****We will be meeting on the southwest side of the Golden Gate Bridge near the Administration Building.
We will be meeting in the gravel car park to the west of the Bridge Administration Building and east of Battery Boutelle. According to the Bridge website, the spaces here are marked free for shorter visits. However, there is an adjacent paved lot which offers a limited number of spaces for $5.00 for a full day. Both lots are located in Merchant Road and is also known as SF Bicycle Route 95, if you choose to ride your bicycle to the Bridge. The MUNI 28 bus also stops at the corner of Merchant and Cranston Road/101.
NOTE: IF YOU ARE UNFAMILIAR WITH THIS AREA, you may also use GPS coordinates - 37°48'19.17"N 122°28'34.76"W for the lot we will meet in.
FROM NORTHBOUND 101 - To reach the area from 101 northbound, take the last northbound exit, turn left at the stop sign into the South Lot and Golden Gate National Recreation Area View and drive through the lot to the underpass beneath the Bridge. You will emerge on the west side of 101. Our parking area is to your right.
FROM SOUTHBOUND 101 - take the most right-hand toll crossing and exit immediately after the toll. This will place you into Merchantl Road. The car parks will be on your right.
Many of you may be familiar with this area as Marshall's Beach is below the car park area. There is also nearby parking at Battery Godfrey and a newly paved lot across the road on the east side. Both of these lots are in Lincoln Blvd.
DIFFICULTY LEVEL: Moderate (the only challenging parts of this hike will be the 1 mile hike up to the Golden Gate bridge from Kirby Cove).
WHAT TO BRING: Bring water, layered clothes, sturdy shoes, sunscreen, lunch, friends, lovers and others.
Pets are not allowed on the Bridge unless they're for the sight-impaired. We highly recommend wearing something Christmas festive - hat, elven shoes, bells, you name it.
RAIN WILL CANCEL THIS EVENT. If rain is in the forecast, we'll keep an eye and post a response the night before or by 7am the morning of the event.
