Non Stop Bhangra British Invasion Month
Non Stop Bhangra returns in March with installment #111.
The UK's impact on Bhangra is unparalleled to any other place outside of India. It was developed in Britain in the 1980s by first and second generation immigrants from the Punjab region of India and Pakistan forming the Punjabi diaspora, drawing from music and song of the Punjab region as well as various Western musical styles. It is seen by some in the West as an expression of South Asian culture as a whole. The amount of music released and the number of artists have helped change the face of Bhangra and led to its immersion with other sounds and put it on the world map. With producers like Panjabi MC and the radio reach of BBC 1's Asian Network, The Uk helped spring board the punjabi sound into the West. This Bridge was quintessential for North America's love to the culture of Punjab and one of the reasons events such as Non Stop Bhangra were able to be created.
So we are excited to host one of our favorite personalities in that SceneBobby Friction who has made a career out of representing British Asian sound; on the turntables, as a recording artist and on-air for over 20years. Bobby was one of the founding members of Ecostani and still works alongside his production partner, The Infinite Scale to record their own original British Asiansound. Friction joined BBC Radio 1 in 2002 co-hosting the Sony Gold award wnning show, 'Bobby Friction & Nihal'. He also won his second Gold Sony Award for his BBC Documentary 'Vote Friction. In 2006, he started his weeknightly 'Friction' show on the Asian Network that has been seen by worldwide as 'the definitive' Asian music show and won him his 3rd Sony Gold. His show has also won twice as the "Best Radio Show" at the UK Asian Music Awards. Since December 2012 he presents a weekly radio show on East Village Radio: Friction on EVR. This is his first time at Non Stop Bhangra and we are excited to have him in the mix.
In addition, the Non Stop Bhangra crew will be in full effect bringing the usual colorful energy and vibes to the night. As Always, the night will kick off with the ritual Bhangra dance lesson followed with vibrant dance performances by the beautiful Dholrhythms Dance Company. Following the performances, Non Stop Bhangra's own DJ Jimmy Love and DJ Mistry will be joined by one of our favorite local DJ's Nix (Bol Punjab Dey) in addition to Bobby Friction on the 1's and 2's along with live dhol drumming to keep you moving all night. Non Stop Bhangra caters to your eyes with a special live painting by Marcus Murray! NSB's photographer Odell Hussey will be in the house to capture all the energy.
If you have never made it out to Non Stop Bhangra event, it's one of a kind night featuring vibrant music, performances, live music, drumming, and one of the most eclectic crowds seen on a dance floor.
