Kyle Abraham, acclaimed choreographer and leader of Kyle Abraham/Abraham.In.Motion will be in residence at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in early January 2016. As a catalyst for Kyle Abraham's new work (commissioned by YBCA) Kyle is convening conversations of disparate groups all over the country. During his residency here at YBCA, he's hoping to put our Young Artists at Work (YAAW) in conversation with elders, specifically those who identify as LGBTQI. This conversation will be used to propel Kyle's practice and choreography for the forthcoming work. While we'd like to keep the youth and the elders at the forefront of the conversation, we'd also like to invite folks who work in queer artistic communities as well as those who study equity, citizenship, freedom, social dance, displacement and/or inclusion to be a part of the talk. If this sounds like you, we invite you into our collaborative process, and ask you to add your stories and memories to the artistic palette. Join us Tuesday January 5th, 2016.

In 2010, he received a prestigious Bessie Award for Outstanding Performance in Dance for his work in The Radio Show, and a Princess Grace Award for Choreography in 2010. The previous year, he was selected as one of Dance Magazine’s 25 To Watch for 2009. In 2011, OUT Magazine labeled Abraham as the “best and brightest creative talent to emerge in New York City in the age of Obama”.
The mission of Kyle Abraham/Abraham.In.Motion is to create an evocative interdisciplinary body of work. Born into hip-hop culture in the late 1970s and grounded in Abraham’s artistic upbringing in classical cello, piano, and the visual arts, the goal of the movement is to delve into identity in relation to a personal history. The work entwines a sensual and provocative vocabulary with a strong emphasis on sound, human behavior and all things visual in an effort to create an avenue for personal investigation and exposing that on stage. A.I.M. is a representation of dancers from various disciplines and diverse personal backgrounds. Combined together, these individualities create movement that is manipulated and molded into something fresh and unique.
About Kyle Abraham's New Work (formerly known as The Social):
Broken up into two parts, The Social: Where My Heart Lies (world premiere 2017) and The Social: Homefront (world premiere 2019) are interactive dance works conducted in a multi-year format. Both works are rooted in conversation and memories based on Kyle Abraham's extensive interviews and community-based activities with people living in cities across America. The Social: WMHL, rooted in community engagement and conversation related to love and loving, is constructed primarily of solos and duets in an hour-length program. Continuing to build on the relationships and trust created during all of the engagement activities experienced in our previous process, The Social: Homefront investigates the social dance experiences that connect a variety of age groups and self-identified subcultures through dialogue and performance. Both works will be documented in the form of a documentary film and a book rich with imagery and writings to accompany the research and presentations of The Social.
