In Supernatural, human and non-human actants camp together on a hot pink terrain under an unblinking fluorescent sky. With axes, wood, violin, electronics and the bare body, Simone Aughterlony, Antonija Livingstone and Hahn Rowe stage an inquiry into some vibrant matters.
Supernatural suggests a wilderness that signifies a plurality of agencies without ontological hierarchy – the vigour of the blade, the skin, the wood, the rope, the gaze, and all in our midst, buzz together lovingly in a hot debate on the political ecology of things.
Queer lives know that being in disguise can encourage the dissolution of normative identity patterns of recognition. Supernatural actively chops up the topography of gender perceptions and welcomes the joyful techno construction of multiple bodies and pleasures.
Is this movement research or fun post-porn practice?
Whatever it is, it brings the bodies and companion materials in conversation to know no difference between being excited, being exciting and being excited-with.
Concept by Simone Aughterlony, an independent artist based and supported in Zurich and Berlin, working predominantly in dance and performance contexts. She has collaborated with makers such as Meg Stuart/Damaged Goods, Forced Entertainment and Jorge León amongst others.
Over the last decade, Simone she has been devising and producing choreographic works of which «Public Property», «Performers on Trial» and the group work «Bare Back Lying» toured extensively in Europe. Together with filmmaker Jorge León, they conceived, curated and directed an artistic project on the subject of domestic service that premiered at the Kunstenfestivaldesarts Brussels (2010). While working on these larger works, a desire for smaller formats took hold, which culminated in «We need to talk» (2011). In January 2013, «Show and Tell», the first work of «The Biofiction Trilogy» premiered in a collaboration with performer Phil Hayes and in September 2013 the second duo «After Life» as a collaboration with DJ and performer Nic Lloyd. She is currently touring «Supernatural» the third work of the trilogy, which is a collaboration with artists, Antonija Livingstone and Hahn Rowe. In 2015, Jorge and Simone devised the project «Uni * Form» which through the guise of police uniforms playfully composes with the dominance of desire, the unbiquity of power and the nature of being bound. «Uni * Form premiered at Zuercher Theater Spektakel and is currently touring.
Her practice is committed to qualities that affirm the transformative potential of bodies and all things engaged in choreographic thought. She has a vested interest in the scope of humour and the mystery of desire to feed the political affects of performance.
