You are cordially invited to join Castro Community OnPatrol (CCOP) in celebrating our 10 Year Anniversary on Tuesday October 4 beginning at 7 PM at Espressamente Illy Café, 2349 Market Street.
SPECIAL NOTE: We will be collecting socks for the Castro Cares outreach program. Please bring a few NEW pairs and put them in the collection bucket.
Ten years ago in October of 2006 the leather community, CCOP founder Carlton Paul, San Francisco Safety Awareness for Everyone, SFPD Mission Station and then Supervisor Bevan Dufty all came together to address serious safety concerns within the Castro and surrounding neighborhoods, and CCOP was born. Orange became the new fashion statement for late night attire, and we successfully trained 150 volunteers within the first few months of our creation.
Against all the odds with respect to an organization established in response to a “crime wave,” CCOP remains active and arguably more effective ten years later as we moved quickly from an initial reactionary model, to our current preventive and educational model. In those ten years we have:
· TRAINED more than 500 volunteers,
· DISTRIBUTED over 90,000 FREE safety whistles and associated safety literature,
· CONDUCTED dozens of FREE Community Self-Defense seminars,
· ATTENDED literally hundreds of community safety meetings,
· ESTABLISHED both the Castro Business Watch (CBW) program and the new Stop The Violence (STV) program,
· SUMMONED medical help for countless numbers of people on our regular patrols,
· WORKED with the Police Department and District Attorneys office on specific cases to help secure prosecutions and stay away orders,
· SUPPORTED many community events sponsored by other community groups and organizations throughout each year.
Please join us to help us celebrate this incredible milestone in our history, and to look forward to the next ten years of CCOP. There will be food and refreshments and we will be presenting some awards to key community members and CCOP Patrollers.
