Ours is a culture increasingly fixed on viral trends and memes. From planking to Pepe the Frog, these are mostly just ways for people to amuse or entertain themselves. The nation was shocked when, in May of 2014, two 12 year old girls in suburban Wisconsin lured another girl into the forest and tried to kill her by stabbing her 19 times because of a meme. The two perpetrators claimed they did it as a sacrifice for the internet phenomenon Slender Man. The incident sparked discussion over the role of the internet in modern children’s lives. But these kinds of attacks, ones in which the attackers claim they have been chosen by some entity to carry out the crime, have been occurring for centuries. What is it about human psychology that convinces people that they are the chosen vessel that needs to commit such violence? What if they’re right? Hecate, the mysterious goddess, is the perfect figure to explore these questions.
