Issa Rae, star and creator of HBO's new comedy Insecure, has made it her goal to share the experience of realistic, complicated, and contemporary women of color with a broad audience. Best known for her beloved YouTube series, The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl-which Issa wrote, directed, and starred in-she is also the author of a New York Times bestselling book of short stories. Issa's work focuses on and accurately depicts the challenges faced by people of color with disarming humor. The glimpses she offers into her inner world are a rare depiction of one aspect of the black experience described by W.E.B. Du Bois as "double-consciousness".
Insecure dissects this sense of duality and other race-related issues with wit and grace. The multiracial cast and writing team, including Larry Wilmore and Melina Matsoukas, is a demonstration of the ongoing move towards diversity in the entertainment industry. This need for change and the impact it has on society at large motivates Issa's work. Issa Rae will be joined in conversation by Erika Chong Shuch to discuss her life, work, and misadventures.
