The Gensler San Francisco Art Committee proudly presents, in partnership with the GLBT Historical Society, QUEER TRACES: a look into the birth of queer culture, life, and design in San Francisco.
This exhibit draws largely from the GLBT Historical Societyâs archive and special collections, which tell the story of the LGBTQ communityâs roots in the city, and how they grew to impact the country and ultimately the world. Those left out of the traditional cultural narrative have often been forced to become custodians of their own histories. The GLBT Historical Society is one such endeavor, born in the midst of the AIDS epidemic of the 1980s, when the belongings of gay men dying from the disease were literally being thrown away. A small group of queer activists made it a point to save discarded photographs, letters, and other mementos of love, loss, and community â even if it meant diving into dumpsters to retrieve them. These priceless artifacts were preserved and in turn, have inspired a new generation to recognize the importance of the LGBTQ community in our collective history.
This joint exhibition aims to shed light on the ever-shifting cultural landscape of San Francisco, and to bring awareness to the GLBT Historical Societyâs mission of preserving and sharing LGBTQ history â including little-known people, events, and organizations that have played a vital role in shaping our city.
Please join us for the opening reception on January 18, 2018, featuring the work of James Hosking and the smooth sounds of DJ Wrong Way!
The exhibit will be available to view during business hours by appointment only from January 19 until March 31. Please email leanne_vanderbyl@gensler.com for details.
