The Stud has a history, but unfortunately most of the history took place elswhere before the Stud moved to its current place. The sign that says "Universal Live Corral" survives from the time (at the other location) when they became a "Universal Life Church" so that they could have "religious services" in order to run an after hours dance club. It was that kind of chutzpah that made the Stud what it was.
Today, however, it survives mostly on theme nights. The place has that well-worn hippie feel to it, which is cool. I wish they can find their niche because the bartenders are nice and the place feels warm and cozy, and they deserve more business.

Went here on a Friday nite just at midnight. 12 people in the entire place, with one guy ROLLING around the dance floor. Classy. The guy at the door charged two of us a cover ($5/ea) and when we paid with a $20, he didn't want to give us our change back. Avoid this place as there are better ones.

Some things in SF are in perpetual change -- The Stud remains a happening boite; friendly staff, eclectic decor and an always-stop-by for celebutants and locals. Trannyshack on Tuesday night @ Midnight is the most unusual drag show, 10 years strong, always a different theme and peopled with the rarest nightclubbers & most outrageously dressed. www.heklina.com and www.studsf.com for more info.
