The large outdoor patio draws scruffy bears, otters and leather cowboys, especially during sunny afternoons.

Was there when it opened
The Lone Star is the result of the earthquake in 1987. The original owner had a very small basement bar. He got a small business loan to open the Lone Star. It was my favorite bar until we moved to San Jose 1995. Met my second great Love there. 25 years ago. Bear Bar. Friendly. Laid back. time tested. It is a local bar that welcomes tourists.
What Happened?
This bar use to be fun but now it seems at 10pm every night, even the weekends it is dead. It use to be catered to the Bear community, but with most gay bars in San Fran, they try to be a bar for every type. That is a great idea in theory, but when you are in a hood with a history for a certain type of bar and crowd. When you do that you are digging your own grave I think.
