Video requests on Tuesdays!
Arguably the strongest drinks in the Castro.
Video bar
This bar is a nice place to have a drink. The bartender Dave was very funny. The place has a feel of an old 1940 movie theater inside. The bar has a show tunes theme to it. It also attracts 40- 60 year olds. I had a good time, but wasnt my favorite place in San Fran.
Now with Bears :)
More and more bears have been hanging out at the Midnight Sun on Sunday evenings. The VJs play a mix of current and retro, plus hilarious clips. A fine and fun way to wind down the weekend.
The Sun has Set
I have loved the "Sun" for many years, about 25 years to be sure. In those years I have seen bartenders and door men come and go and have always been treated nice, welcome as a regular and looked forward to meeting my friends their. As a business man myself I have learned that while employees do come and go, you want your good and loyal customers to stay, In those 25 years I have spent Thousands$$$ adding to the lively hood of the bar and its employees. Recently they hired a new door man who called me an "old man" and said "I didnt have the right to be there". Maybe I am old, 51 years old to be exact. I have spent the mentioned Thousands of dollars over the past 25 years in the Sun, i have been nice, pleasent, never caused a scene. I've been a perfect customer, spending lots of money and causing no problems. I didnt realize that age had anything to do with it. I will say that from now on this "old man" will happily spend his money elsewhere, and do my best to convince everyone else to do the same. For me, the Sun has Set on the Midnight Sun....
My Favorite Bar in the Castro!!!!
This place is always my go to video bar. It has a wonderful crowd, all nice and friendly. Wonderful bartenders and nice drinks and specials every day. You can never go wrong here.
Fun, friendly video bar
Small and packed with friendly neighbourhood guys, this is a great place to start a big night out (or interrupt one, depending on how 'friendly' the guy you're talking to wants to get). Good drinks and friendly staff too.
Evolution Doesn't Exist QED
I went recently on the Friday before Folsom, advised to enjoy kind of a bearey muscley evening, and got in early (before the block-long line!) and have to say: I went there when I was still in school in LA - San Francisco was an escape (I am a Caltech Geek: Gay Sheldon for Big Bangers) and it was a revelation in the 80's to see a video bar - even though it was Juice Newton and Bananarama. Nice crowd, this friday, and more than a few recognized the notorious "texbearjoe" from bigmuscle.com but... it was still a video bar! In the same configuration! With the same... problems! In Amsterdam at De Spijker they would do things like show Looney Tunes juxtaposed with hardcore fuck films to mix it up, or in Paris early 90s they were doing video mashups of "The Thing" with "Push Push in the Bush". All I could think of was that I had walked into a "Literal Video" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lj-x9ygQEGA. Only three stars for proving you don't have to evolve to survive.
Good when flying solo
This was one of the first gay bars my friends took me to (back in the '80s), and for many years it was the only one I'd go to by myself. I could just watch the videos and not be self-conscious about being a wall-flower. Although it can be nice to come watch shows like "American Idol" and the Oscars with a crowd, the chatter from other patrons can make it hard to actually hear. But then, if all I really wanted was to watch TV, I could do that at home.
Look at me, dammit!
I didn't wash and dry my tight jeans on HOT so you people could watch television!
The non-stop music and TV videos make the clientele stare up at the screens like turkeys in the rain.
